Fels Naptha Soap

Here's the soap recipe. I found all the ingredients in our local Safeway store. The last time I made this, I used the whole bar and made a triple batch. It seemed to gel better this way and I have less liquid at the bottom. I use old liquid soap and softener containers, ice cream buckets, milk jugs or whatever else I can find to store it in. With a triple batch I had to really use my imagination to find enough containers. It seems to work well though. I like the smell of Downy so I use that with it and I have always liked BIZ so I use that a lot, just like I did with other detergents.

Amount     Measure    Ingredient
1/3 bar Fels Naptha laundry Soap
1/2 cup Arm and Hammer super washing soda
1/2 cup Borax

Grate the Fels Naptha Soap. Put in a pan with 3 pints (6 cups) water, and heat until dissolved. Stir in 1/2 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup Borax. Mix and heat until all ingredients are dissolved. Cook for 15 minutes. It will look similar to honey. Remove from heat. In a large bucket (3 or more gallon) put 1 quart hot water, then add the soap. Mix. Add 5 ½ quarts cold water (or enough to make 2 gallons total mixture). Mix until well blended. Set aside for 24 hours. It will gel up. Use 1/2 cup for each load.

NOTES : This soap separates as it sits and needs to be stirred or shaken before each use. It looks similar to egg drop soup! It does not make suds. You still need to pretreat stains as with other soaps. Nutr. Assoc. : 0 0 0
